Financial Assistance For CNA Program Costs

Financial Assistance For CNA Program Costs

CNA program costs are often reimbursed or sponsored through employers or job assistance programs.

The cost of the course is $1200 plus an additional $275 (approx) for the state test out. If you are paying up front for yourself, the great news is that both federal and state law requires Medicare-certified and Medicaid-certified health care facilities to reimburse nursing assistants for the cost of their training and testing if they meet the following conditions:

  • The nursing assistant has received a job offer from the facility within 12 months of completing the training and testing.
  • The nursing assistant has not already been reimbursed by another facility. Reimbursement must be made by the first facility where the nursing assistant is employed 90 days from the date of the job offer.
  • The nursing assistant has not quit or been terminated within 90 days of the job offer.
  • The nursing assistant has paid for the cost of training and testing him/herself. It is important to keep all receipts as the facility is not required to reimburse the nursing assistant without proof that he or she paid for the training and materials.

Nursing assistants may be reimbursed for the following expenses:

  • Tuition and mandatory fees and insurances.
  • Required textbooks and supplies
  • Uniforms and shoes (reasonably priced) that are required for the classroom training and state test out.
  • Mileage. To be reimbursed the student must have kept mileage records and must request reimbursement.

Nursing assistants must be reimbursed for the cost of NATO (Nursing Assistant Test Out):

  • The facility is required to reimburse the nursing assistant for the cost of the test and up to two retakes. (If after three attempts a student does not pass, the student must retake the nursing assistant course.)

Reimbursement is not made to third parties. Reimbursement is not required by assisted living facilities, hospitals or home care agencies. Reimbursement is required by MN Statue 4144A.611 and DHS Bulletin 9.
